What is Print-on-Demand?

Print-on-demand (POD) is a manufacturing process in which copies of a text are printed to order, typically using digital technology.

The great advantage of POD is that it facilitates the printing of as little as one copy of a book at a very low price. This allows print order processing on a daily basis rather than printing large-volume batch orders. Additionally, POD production quality is virtually indistinguishable from offset printing.

In comparison, traditional publishers print thousands of copies as part of scheduled print runs. Although this results in slightly lower manufacturing costs per copy, it requires a large upfront investment to produce and store an inventory of books.
